From the Archive: Experimental Turntablism

vinyl record stickers experimental tuntablism

I’m in the final stretch of a practice led PhD developing approaches to turntablist composition and performance. I’ve been reflecting on how my approach has developed over the years from experiments with junk shop records to becoming a vinyl mastering engineer and cutting my own records for use in composition and performance. I recently unearthed a live set which was broadcast on Demon FM in 2006 and I can hear quite clearly how my turntablist aesthetic has developed over time.

When this performance was recorded, I was experimenting with turntablist improvisation using two turntables with a Vestax PCM 05 Pro DJ mixer that had an inbuilt delay unit. (more…)

Green Ep is a studio collaboration which was recorded in 2008 with the composer and musician Adam Weikert. The tracks were entirely improvised combining sampled sounds on turntables with samples and keyboard playing on a laptop. The EP was released as a CDR in February 2008 and was sold and handed out at gigs around that time. (more…)

Muted Fnord, Poisk and James Kelly Ft Ola Szmidt

Muted Fnord Poisk James Kelly

I will be performing tracks from my album Transformation of The Mind at the Crumblin Cookie in Leicester in December. I will be cutting the instrumental stems of my tracks to vinyl at my studio Tracks to Wax and remixing the album using three turntables, with live vocals from Ola Szmidt. Both Dave Dhonau and Ola from Muted Fnord feature heavily on my album, so it will be a pleasure to support them at this gig. The event will also feature a set from Poisk who has some interesting sounds coming from his bandcamp page.

Modular Analogue DJ Mixer

November 8, 2011

I use DJ equipment to create and perform original electronic music and I have been working on an approach to performance where I cut my music to vinyl and use three turntables to remix stems. I have also been experimenting with three deck mixing/scratching as part of Pure Phase, where two DJ’s perform together at the same time. I am looking to create a modular DJ mixer that has a range of analogue filters allowing me to sculpt the sound during performance. (more…)

Pure Phase Live Dubstep

October 14, 2010

The Pure Phase live dubstep performance is coming along nicely. After many hours fighting to get our laptops to sync together, we decided to try both using the same laptop. We’re running Traktor Scratch Pro and Ableton live with bespoke Reaktor patches, using my midi enabled Korg Zero 4 DJ mixer to control Ableton and Reaktor. (more…)

Stenchival

August 19, 2009

A few weeks ago we put on a mini Stench Festival, with 2 nights of electronic music at The Great Central Gallery, Leicester. The first night was curated by Bathysphere with peformances from Asmo, Neil Unreal, Sam Dodson and myself. The second night was hosted by PVC, with performances from BJ Cole VS Myoptik, Phaelah, Samual and the Dragons, Glatze and Wassim. With sound system prived by the Biscuit Tin Sound System. The gig was broadcast live on Ustream and the video above is from the first night, filmed by Jaqueline Cheval.

I’ve recently bought a Korg Zero4 DJ mixer and I’m using it with Ableton and Traktor Scratch Pro. I’ve been spending a lot of time composing and I use this gear and DJ techniques to realise my music in performance. This gig was my first opportunity to try it out in performance. Thanks to all the event organisers for a great weekend of gigs!
